Chinese Moon Festival 2011

The Chinese Moon Festival, also known as the Mid-Autumn Festival, is right around the corner, which means Moon Cake is coming soon to a store/bakery near you! The indispensable delicacy is traditionally eaten and offered between friends and on family gatherings while celebrating the festival; trust me, they are very addicting. Moon Cake can be purchased in most Asian Markets, but tend to sell out quick. A great Chinese bakery to get Moon Cake is at Keefer Court, which is located at the intersection of Cedar and Riverside Ave in Minneapolis (On the West Bank of the U of M campus). Make sure you get them while they're still available!

The Moon Festival is celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth month in the Chinese calender, which is usually around late September. It is a date that parallels the autumnal equinox of the solar calendar, when the moon is supposedly at its fullest and roundest; celebrated by people in the Chinese influenced. This festival dates back over 3,000 years to moon worship in China's Shang Dynasty. It is also celebrated by the Vietnamese, Koreans, and Japanese in different forms. This year it will be celebrated on September 12th; make sure you mark the date and stock up on Moon Cake!

Made in China

Here's an interesting fact I just read, only 2.7% of US personal spend in 2010 was from goods made in China. Surprised? US actually spent about 88.5% on goods made here. The majority of goods we buy here in the US, but made in China, include cars, furniture and household equipment.

So, if you're among the many Americans thinking goods made in China were among the major contributor to our massive U.S debt, guess again!
